Irine Darchia

Associate Professor of Classics at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), Georgia. She studied at the University of Athens in 1996-1997 (Modern Greek Language and Culture), defended her doctoral thesis on Plato’s Phaedo (Literature, Philosophy, Mythology, Mysticism) in 1998 and the post-doctoral thesis (Habilitation) on “Color Phenomenon in Greek Tragedy” in 2005.

Dr. Irine Darchia is teaching at the Departments of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of TSU. She was visiting professor at Free University Berlin (Germany), Universities of Pisa and Bologna (Italy), University of Thessaloniki (Greece), Universities of Oslo and Bergen (Norway).

Dr. Irine Darchia was Deputy Head of the Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of TSU in 2000-2010. She is Higher Education Reform Expert (HERE) of National Tempus Office (Georgia) since 2009.

Dr. Irine Darchia was Vice-Rector of TSU (2010), Member of Accreditation Council of Georgia (2008-2009), Head of Quality Assurance Department of TSU (2006-2010), Head of Quality Assurance Department of the Faculty of Humanities of TSU (2005-2006).

Dr. Irine Darchia has studied six foreign languages (English, Russian, Modern Greek, Italian, Ancient Greek, Latin). She is the author of five books (2 monographs, handbook, dictionary, translation). She took part in the development of Modern Greek-Georgian Dictionary.
